What We Do
As of May 2022, 100 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide. This accounts for an increase of 10.7 million people displaced from the end of the previous year, propelled by the war in Ukraine and other deadly conflict (UNHCR).
More refugees and asylum seekers arrive in the U.S. every day. In fact, the refugee cap for 2023 has now been lifted to 125,000. One of the most difficult parts of refugee integration is placement in a permanent residence.
Imagine you have been forcibly displaced from your home by war or disaster. You arrive in a new country unable to speak the language. You have mouths to feed, and no place to live. The rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $2,500 a month and you need 3x that to qualify, plus +650 credit score, and another $2,500.00 for a security deposit. To get a job you need a permanent address, and to get a permanent address you need a job. Because you have no credit history and little income, you can’t get landlords to approve your rental application. You are stuck homeless.
Our Mission
Refugia is a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization that aims to solve this housing problem by partnering with resettlement agencies to provide rental assistance and lease guarantorship to displaced people, with a focus on families and those with a disability. Our goal is to successfully provide housing for 3 families in 2023
